The Costa Mesa Playhouse is serving up a southern slice of life that's as warm and comforting as sweet potato pie with its production of Robert Harling's heartwarming play Steel Magnolias that runs June 10 - July 3. The show is directed by Jason Holland.

Steel Magnolias is the quintessential story of friendship and trust. In the world of Truvy's local-homegrown beauty salon, six very different women come together to share their secrets, fears and love for one another while engaging the audience in hysterical and neighborly gossip. From weddings to divorces, babies to funerals, new beginnings to happy endings, they share each moment in their lives with grace, determination, and perfectly coiffed hair. When tragedy strikes, it is in the familiar comfort of Truvy's salon where they seek the solace and support that carries them through.

The play is based on the death of Robert Harling's younger sister, a diabetic. As her best friend and closest sibling, Robert found it very difficult to cope with her death and was advised to write about his feelings as a coping method. It began as a short story and evolved into a full-length play due to the complexity of the relationships and emotions that existed within the characters.

Steel Magnolias opened Off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre in New York City in March 1987, and is produced frequently at theaters throughout the United States. The play was made into an Oscar-nominated film in 1989 that starred Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts.

Steel Magnolias opens with a low-priced preview performance on Friday, June 10, with all seats $16. Saturday, June 11, is a gala opening night celebration with a champagne and appetizer reception. All seats are $23. For all other performances, tickets are $18 general admission, $16 for students and seniors, and $13 per person for groups of 10 or more.

Steel Magnolias plays Fridays & Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm, June 10 through July 3.
