Review: Dizzying Night at the Met with Grigorian's Splendiferous BUTTERFLY in House Debut
Opera: April 28, 2024

Those of us who keep an eye on the comings and goings of singers at major opera houses around the world, have known that Friday’s debutant, Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian, was going to be one to watch. And it was. No worries about whether her voice would translate from Europe’s smaller houses to the Met’s enormous hall: Grigorian may have been singing Puccini’s Cio-Cio-San/Madama Butterfly this time around, but she’s a well-schooled Lady Macbeth and Turandot as well, bringing a notably large voice with her. She survived the Met’s notoriously short rehearsal time for revivals (particularly for the second cast of the season). Lastly, she even made it through the final curveball, when tenor Jonathan Tetelman became ill and standby Chad Shelton had to take over as Pinkerton; he did well considering the circumstances, but he was no match for her.

Review: MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY: Cabarets Are Happy Partner Projects for J2 ...at AMT Theater

J2 Spotlight Musical Theater is finishing its run of 'Do Re Mi' this weekend, but set aside a night to have a cabaret evening on the stage at their home base, the AMT Theater on West 45 Street.

Review: SPOTLIGHT ON ... BEING YOU a Festival of New Works Presented by Prism Theatre Company
St. Louis: April 28, 2024

Some bright local voices were heard at Prism Theatre Company’s SPOTLIGHT ON ... BEING YOU over this past weekend in St. Louis. The best of the festival was the performance billed as a ‘Popera’ written and composed by Holly Barber and Lee Ehmke. THAT PERFECT KISS, a retelling of Cinderella and her Prince, is a short musical ditty about finding one’s genuine self. Accompanied by composer Holly Barber on guitar, Sarah Lueken, Rachel Bailey, Zach Thompson, and Matt Kauzlarich performed the light pop score with charm and pizzaz. In just a few minutes, Barber and Ehmke used familiar characters, re-told their stories, provided them arc, and created an indelible musical memory for the audience. The prince wasn't the only thing that was charming in this coming-of-age tale.

Review: SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY: IMPERMANENCE at The Kennedy Center
Washington, DC: April 28, 2024

A beautifully asynchronous and turbulent super-organism, Impermanence opened its weekend at the Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theater on April 16th.

Review: SOMETHING ROTTEN! at Keystone Theatrics At The Playhouse At Allenberry
Central Pennsylvania: April 28, 2024

The show is filled to the brim with witty puns, double entendre, and references to Shakespeare’s works and well-known musicals. Something Rotten! is the perfect solution for those in need of a good laugh!

Review: AMM(I)GONE at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company
Washington, DC: April 28, 2024

The semantics and silence that delineate love and disclosure are operating at full throttle in the probing personal story of playwright and performer Adil Mansoor in the theatrical experience that is entitled Amm(i)gone. As the uber-talented Mansoor invites his very traditional Pakistani mother to translate Sophocles’ Antigone into Urdu, one soon realizes that this is just the starting point of a very interactive theatrical exploration that soon unspools into a multi -layered explication of the issues of culture, faith, family, history and, most especially, the special bond between a mother and a son.

Review: SOUTH PACIFIC at Fulton Theatre
Central Pennsylvania: April 28, 2024

I don’t think that South Pacific or even the shows of Rogers and Hammerstein are especially dated or irrelevant.  A few years back, Fulton put on The Sound of Music to great appreciation and acclaim.  I wish they were able to capture some of that magic this time around.

Review: AMADEUS at Theatre On The Bay
South Africa: April 28, 2024

AMADEUS by Peter Shaffer is widely regarded as an absolute classic play from the 20th century. The words flow off the page with a rise and fall that can mimic great music - exactly what is needed to tell the story of the rivalry between Mozart and Salieri. What I loved most about this offering from Theatre on the Bay is the styling and how that pushed the musicality of the piece even more.

Review: A CHORUS LINE at The Norris Theatre
Los Angeles: April 28, 2024

The Palos Verdes Performing Arts' production of A Chorus Line is everything community theater should be: It makes you realize you don’t need a big Broadway house to get a Broadway experience.
